Community Safety Strategy

On 26 April 2021, our Community Safety Engager John Hosie launched the Community Safety Strategy for Camelon and Tamfourhill. This was based on his first year of work including research, conversation, group engagement and listening to the real needs of the local community. The main aim of the strategy is to work on various different activities so that “Camelon and Tamfourhill will be a safer, happier, and more attractive place to live”.

You can download the Strategy document below, but please note this is a working document and if you still feel something needs added of changed, you can get in touch and help us. For now, here’s John with his launch presentation.

John writes the following in his strategy introduction:

The process for confirming this community safety strategy has been focussed upon identifying the communities’ priorities and aspirations for making their community a safer, happier, and more attractive place to live. The resultant strategy represents the voice of local people and this has been set within the wider national context and with an awareness of the central driving forces and policy targets of our main partners.

The methodology of the community consultation period involved: a detailed survey, 1-1 interviews, Focus groups and meetings with key stakeholders and partners. The approach sought to emulate the Scottish Community Safety Networks Manifesto 2021 assertion that: Communities will be safer if there is more involvement of people in communities in the planning, delivery, and development of the services that they use. This is often referred to as co-production but additionally this document should be viewed as a community development and engagement framework where the key outcomes are underpinned by the notion of community empowerment and capacity building.

The strategy document has been mindful of the current work being undertaken by the Falkirk Community Planning Partnership and the emerging 10-year Falkirk Plan, and there is an awareness that Falkirk Councils long term planning processes can be a facilitator and enabler of our local community action plans. This community safety strategy can therefore work in full alignment with the local authorities’ wider contexts and contribute to the Scottish Government’s National Performance Framework: We live in communities that are inclusive, empowered, resilient and safe.

This local strategy is intended to be organic and fluid, it is a framework and the starting point of our community engagement activities; agencies and partner organisations are required to respond to their potential roles within each of the key outcomes, the success of the strategy being reliant upon our local activities being effectively aligned to both local and national government strategies and policies.

On a personal note, I would like to thank the various community groups, individuals and organisations for being open and welcoming and ever prepared to meet with me (virtually) to discuss issues and share experiences. Thanks also to my colleagues at Our Place Camelon and Tamfourhill, I have appreciated your positive feedback, encouragement and keeping me on the right track.
